6. Transition Elements eLearn.Punjab
In This Chapter You Will Learn:
1. The definition and classification of transition elements.
2. The electronic configurations and the general characteristics like colour
binding energies, etc.
3. The definition of a complex compound and the related terms like ligand,
coordination number etc.
4. The nomenclature and the geometrical shapes of simple complex
compounds.
5. A brief description of the manufacture of wrought iron and steel from iron
ore.
6. How corrosion is caused and the ways to prevent it.
7. The important methods of preparation of potassium chromate, potassium
dichromate, potassium permanganate and their properties.
6.1 INTRODUCTION
Transition elements may be defined as those elements which have partially
filled d or f-subshells in atomic state or in any of their commonly occurring
oxidation states.
