14 r l Investigation of the conditions for seed germi-
^ nation

Date

The process through which a seed becomes active to form a young seedling
is called seed germination. Favorable conditions (water, temperature ,
oxygen etc) are required for seed germination. The embryonic stem below
the point of attachment of the cotyledons is the hypocotyl and above the point
of attachment is epicotyl. The root is the first structure that emerges from the
radicle present in the seeds. Then plumule develops into tiny shoot which
elongates and comes out of soil.

The seeds ofmost plants when ripe have low water content and germination can
not occur until the seed coat and other tissues have imbibed (taken in) water. Air
provides oxygen for the respiration in the cells of embryo. Seeds differ greatly in
their temperature requirement for germination. The optimum temperature for the
germination ofthe seeds ofmost plants ranges from 25-30 C.
